Born into a musical family, Austin Lewellen played several different instruments before settling on the double bass. Well-versed in both orchestral and contemporary music, Austin has recently held fellowships at the Spoleto Festival in South Carolina, the BANFF Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta, and the Lucerne Festival Academy in Switzerland. An alumnus of both the Oberlin Conservatory and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, he returns for his second year as a DACAMERA Young Artist. Outside of this work, Austin is a founding member of Loop38, a Houston-based new music ensemble in its fourth season. When he is not playing bass, you can probably find him running along the Braes Bayou or grinding coffee at the House of Coffee Beans.
