Menil Collection’s October 1 Cy Twombly Book Launch with Sarah Rothenberg and curator Michelle White

On October 1, The Menil Collection hosts a book launch and reception for the new publication, Cy Twombly, Treatise on the Veil, 1970.

The book explores one of the American artist’s largest paintings—the second version of his Treatise on the Veil. Cy Twombly (1928 –2011) created the 33-foot long painting, which is part of the Menil’s permanent collection, during a short period of focused creativity along with more than a dozen drawings. The new book examines these works in relation to Twombly’s oeuvre, contemporaneous explorations of time, the Orpheus myth, and music, among other themes that influenced this epic work.

Michelle White, Senior Curator of the Menil Collection, and DACAMERA Artistic Director Sarah Rothenberg, who each contributed essays to the book, will discuss the painting in the Menil’s contemporary galleries, where it is currently on view. Their talks will be followed by a presentation on the making of the book with the Menil’s Director of Publishing, Joseph N. Newland. Copies of the book will be available for sale during the reception

This program is free and open to the public; limited seating will be available on a first-come first-serve basis.
