ST. LAWRENCE STRING QUARTET: FRACTALS
BEETHOVEN AND JOHN ADAMS PREMIERE
Haydn – Quartet in F Minor, Op. 20, No. 5
John Adams – Second Quartet (Houston premiere) (listen to an excerpt)
Beethoven – Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 131
St. Lawrence String Quartet (Geoff Nuttall, violin; Owen Dalby, violin; Lesley Robertson, viola; Christopher Costanza, cello)
The outstanding St. Lawrence String Quartet returns with a Houston premiere and masterpieces by Haydn and Beethoven. The new quartet by American master John Adams explores his musical roots in the classical repertoire and the life-changing experience he had as a teenager of attending performances by the Budapest and Juilliard Quartets. Reflecting deeply on his formative years, especially on the power of Beethoven’s late works, Adams bases this new work on what he calls “fractals,” or small fragments, from Beethoven’s last piano sonatas.
The Houston premiere of the new quartet by John Adams anticipates Houston Grand Opera’s 30-year anniversary production of Nixon in China.
