Trumpet player Skylar Tang was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She won the 2022 Essentially Ellington’s Student Composition/Arranging Contest for her original composition “Kaleidoscope.” During her first semester at Columbia University, Joshua Redman invited her to record on his album, Words Fall Short. Her Quartet tours nationally and internationally and recently performed at the 2026 Montreal Jazz Festival.
“She came in the next day with the whole thing memorized…She played it perfectly…and sounded like she understood the song better than I did!”
— Joshua Redman on Skylar Tang’s performance on his song Icarus
