Weinberg’s Piano Quintet

MIECZYSLAW WEINBERG PIANO QUINTET, OP. 18
DAEDALUS STRING QUARTET; SARAH ROTHENBERG, PIANO

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the death of Polish-Russian composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg (December 8, 1919 – February 26, 1996), DACAMERA presents a performance of his intensely powerful 1944 Piano Quintet. The Piano Quintet is a dramatic and powerful testament to the historical moment in which it was composed. Since Houston Grand Opera’s revival of Weinberg’s opera The Passenger, the posthumous reputation of this brilliant composer continues to grow. Symphonic in scale and dramatic scope, the Piano Quintet is one of the greatest works of this form of the 20th century. A champion of the work, renowned pianist Sarah Rothenberg is joined by the esteemed Daedalus Quartet.

“a hidden 20th-century master…perhaps as prolific as Shostakovich and hardly less gifted.” – The New York Times on Mieczysław Weinberg

“The four players disappeared into the music…This was ensemble playing at its best.” — Threepenny Review on the Daedalus Quartet

“[Sarah Rothenberg is] a pianist who combines heart, intellect, and fabulous technical resources” — Fanfare
