Program
Johannes Brahms
Clarinet Quintet in B Minor, Op. 115
String Sextet in G Major, Op. 36
Musicians
Parker Quartet (Daniel Chong, violin; Ken Hamao, violin; Jessica Bodner, viola; Kee-Hyun Kim, cello); Charles Neidich, clarinet; Dimitri Murrath, viola; Valentin Radutiu, cello
Following their electrifying performance last season, the Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet returns with distinguished guest artists in a glorious program of Brahms’s chamber music. The early String Sextet – composed by the young Brahms as he sought to escape Beethoven’s shadow – soars with melody and inspiration. In his last years, Brahms fell in love with the clarinet, and we hear one of the most moving works of the chamber music repertoire, his Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, a heartfelt new look at a form mastered by Mozart 100 years earlier.
The Quartet is joined by clarinetist Charles Neidich, recognized worldwide as one of the most mesmerizing virtuosos on his instrument; award-winning German cellist Valentin Radutiu, praised by the Süddeutsche Zeitung as “one of the great cello talents of our time”; and Belgian-American violist Dimitri Murrath, winner of the prestigious Primrose International Viola Competition.
