Following recent acclaimed appearances at the Library of Congress, London’s Wigmore Hall, and on chamber music series across the U.S., the Horszowski Trio’s eagerly-awaited return to DACAMERA brings a program filled with the spirit of re-invention.
“Don’t publish this trio! The public will not understand it,” admonished Haydn, after hearing the young Ludwig van Beethoven’s C Minor trio in its first performance. This daring and dramatic work, now a chamber music favorite, opens the evening. With this first published opus, in 1795, Beethoven made something new of the trio form he inherited from Haydn and Mozart. In 2020, Charles Wuorinen’s last composition, composed for the Horszowski Trio, brings exhilarating virtuosity to the same classical ensemble. An imaginative re-envisioning of Schoenberg’s magical Six Little Pieces introduces new colors to the piano trio, including subtle use of percussion. Mendelssohn’s soaring Romantic trio builds to a surprisingly rapturous climax based on a Lutheran hymn.
