Born in 1926, maverick composer Morton Feldman continued a legacy of avant-garde composers inspired by art, from Erik Satie to John Cage. Feldman sought to emulate abstract painting by creating music of stillness. In his final work of 1987, the classical form of piano quartet is transformed by Feldman into a delicate contemplation of memory, constructed out of magical harmonies and shifting patterns.
American artist Terry Winters’s works on paper, starting with his early drawings from the 1980’s, are equally concerned with “non-narrative” art, and his explorations of repetition and variation create an illuminating dialogue with Feldman’s music.
Three outstanding young string players join pianist Sarah Rothenberg, who opens the program with a Schubert Moment musical, paying homage to one of Feldman’s greatest inspirations from the past.
Presented in conjunction with the Menil Collection exhibition, Terry Winters: Vitalized Geometry
Artist Talk: Terry Winters in conversation with Alexi Worth
